Three Ways to Help Yourself When You’re Feeling Lazy and Unproductive

We’ve all been there. I’ve been there a million times. There have been so many days when I just cannot get out of bed. All I want to do is sleep until I’m forced to do something.

There have been days when I need to face many things, mainly work, but I just cannot court my muse and be productive. This is the daily struggle for someone who works from home.

But despite all that, I still survive. I still get through.

If you want to make money and be successful, procrastination and laziness are a big no-no. But they are inevitable. The only thing we can do about them tomorrow is to counteract them.

Based on my own experiences, here are some things that can help you:

KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES

When you’re still in bed and you already have that lazy feeling, think about what you prioritize in life. Think about all the things that need to be done. Remember that it is better to start your day with your priorities than with what needs to be done immediately. The fact that you have urgent things to do is a sign that you are not doing a good job organizing and prioritizing the things you have in life. Moreover, when you know your priorities, you feel more motivated to work your ass off.

So what do you prioritize? Your work? Your relationships? How do these motivate you? What role do they play in your life? How valuable are they?

When I wake up in the morning, I always immediately think about my job and how happy I am that I am doing what I enjoy the most. And this, in itself, is the main reason I feel motivated to get up and hustle. Right now, I am only working 8 hours a week and my friends have been wondering what I do with the other 160 hours. To be honest, I do a lot of things. I just prioritize my job even when it’s only 8hr/week. My job right now really makes me happy. I feel blessed that I am working with a company that supports me and motivates me to achieve my goals and dreams.

LEARN TO DEAL WITH SHORT-TERM PAIN

Being forced to get out of bed when you still want to sleep in is one of the most painful things in this world. However, it’s just short-term. The pain should only last for five minutes. If shouldn’t last more than that, otherwise, you are a loser. Take it from Richard Whately who said, “Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be all day hunting for it.”

Imagine having to wake up at eight in the morning because you need to create and design a presentation for your company. You set the alarm clock at 7:45 AM to allow you some time to prepare. The presentation should be done by 10:00.

However, you did not get up at the time you set for yourself. You ended up waking at 9:15 AM, which means you only had 45 minutes left to do your presentation. You were still able to finish your presentation, however, it was rushed and you weren’t sure if the quality was great. And you know what this means. Low quality = less value. And because you know the quality wasn’t great, you’d start feeling bad. And you would start thinking about it over and over again during the entire day.

Not only that, you would also start thinking about the time you lost while sleeping. You might even blame yourself for sleeping in.

To avoid that, you have to learn how to deal with this short-term pain. Force yourself to wake up at the time you set for yourself. Remind yourself that you would rather only feel terrible for waking up than feel terrible for not being able to accomplish your goal. Think about it, which one is more painful?

REMIND YOURSELF THAT “HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING”

I have proven the line “how you do anything is how you do everything” to be true and effective. When you excel at something, you have the tendency to focus more on it and lose focus on other things. That is not ideal. If you want to excel at everything, you need to balance your focus. Do things in proportions.


When you look at it closely, being lazy and unproductive is more of a mind game. You need to motivate yourself to get out of bed. You need to determine what you prioritize and remind yourself why you need to do what you need to do. 🙂
